Message from our host Jim Smith:

 Greetings Everyone,

Please mark your calendars and get ready for three—count ‘em three--- Hometowns in a row.  We want to learn more about the major construction projects going on in the city. With all that is happening, it’s going to take a couple of Hometowns to get ‘er done.  So, here’s what we have in mind:

This Thursday, April 14.  --  Updates on the Montana Heritage Center and the redevelopment of the Capital Hill Mall property.

We will learn the latest news on the mall redevelopment.  Question: what are we going to call it?  It won’t be the Capital Hill Mall anymore, will it?

Also, Molly Kruckenberg, Montana Historical Society and Charlene Porsild, Montana History Foundation will join us to discuss the progress being made at the new Montana Heritage Center.

Next Thursday, April 21. --  Tour of Shodair Hospital.  Craig Aasved and his colleagues have graciously offered to give Hometown Helena a tour of the new hospital.  We’ll get you the details about where to park, where to assemble, what to wear and anything else Thursday as well as next week.  The hour that morning will be entirely devoted to the tour of the new facility: no introductions, no announcements, no program other than the tour itself.  More to come on this, but it’s a great opportunity to see and learn.  Thanks very much to Craig, Keith, Alana and all the great folks at Shodair.

Thursday, April 28. -- Regular Hometown Helena.  The program that morning will be the Office of County Attorney, by Lewis and Clark County Attorney Leo Gallagher.  We understand why there is a lot of interest in this particular race, with long time CA Leo Gallagher retiring, and three competent, qualified individuals vying to replace him.  We thought Hometown Helena could be helpful by educating people about the office itself.  Leo will give us a thorough overview: the duties of the CA, current funding and staffing of the office, types of cases, numbers of cases, the relationship to and interaction with the rest of the criminal justice system.

So it’s going to a busy few weeks.

We are getting calls and inquiries from candidates for office asking about introducing themselves at Hometown.  We say that all are welcome to participate and introduce themselves to the ‘Hometowners’ but that is about the extent of our political involvement at this time.

Also, I reached out to Tim Burton, and invited him to join us one of these weeks.  He will do that as soon as he settles into his new/old job at the City of Helena.

All for now.  Sure hope you can zoom in Thursday morning for another great Hometown Helena.

Jim Smith

Ann Waickman: I wonder if someone online needs to lead this meeting. Audio from
the MT Club is very poor with a long delay. Would that help?

Craig Aasved: Jim-

Diana Hammer: John Repke, it was great to meet you last week and discuss your
campaign. You would be a wonderful and welcome addition to the PSC for District 5! Good luck!
Kellie McBride, Lewis and Clark County Criminal Justice Services: I agree with Ann...

Peter Strauss: Yah - I'm afraid the MT Club connection is not so good. Aja, could you
pick somoni?

Shawn White Wolf: Is this being held in person at the MT Club now?

Bruce Whittenberg: This is not working.

Shawn White Wolf: oh it sounds terrible.

Craig Aasved: Jim - Those talking on Zoom are very clear. Very hard to hear those from MT
Club. Anyway, Shodair will host next Thursday 9/21 @ 7:00 at our new hospital. A special
invite will be sent to everyone with parking directions. We are very excited to show the
progress of our project.

Peter Strauss: Thanks Craig - looing forward to it!
Chris & Shelly: The WiFi at Montana Club is probably too slow to support the Zoom
video and audio.

Emily Frazier: Much better! Good job team!

Peter Strauss: Carl was a GREAT guy and I will miss him dearly.

Ann Waickman: Yes! Much improved and I have video of MT Club too!

Eric Feaver: Montana History Foundation - very impressive!!

Ann Waickman: The History Hikes and walks are well planned and fun. I learned a lot
last year!

Zach Coe: Thank you Charlene! We hope to see as many of you as possible on the

Helena History Hikes & Walks this summer!

Peter Strauss: Can you put a link to the history walks in the chat box, or have the

HomeTown folks send it out via email?

Zach Coe: https://www.mthistory.org/history-hikes-walks/

Mary Ann Dunwell: So beautiful!

Peter Strauss: Thanks Zach!

Nikki Andersen: Hearing various stories about what the future of the Panhandler space is going to be. Anyone have an update?

Gabrielle, AJAY MT (she/her): Thank you, speakers. Very interesting to hear about the
current and new projects!
Peter Strauss: Great job, Molly. This is exciting and the new building is an important project for all of Montana. Can't wait to get it finished and get back to the exhibits and the amazingly cool stuff demonstrating our history!

Cora Helm: I'm so grateful you still present this program online. It saves on gas for those of us who have to drive into town. Thank you.

Mary Ann Dunwell: Happy Easter and Passover everyone! Have a blessed season of renewal…and Spring (once we get there).
