Hometown Helena this Thursday, February 22nd: Helena Afghan Refugee Resettlement Team

February 20, 2024

Greetings Everyone,

We had a great meeting last week at Helena College (HC). Despite nearly a foot of new snow, nearly 60 people attended our inaugural meeting at this fine institution. Dean Sandy Bauman and the staff at HC were glad to have us there. Dean Bauman welcomed Hometown Helena by saying that these meetings are learning opportunities, and that fits very well with the Mission of Helena College, which is ‘Learning.’ I’ve always felt exactly the same way about Hometown—that these weekly get togethers are a learning opportunity for me. Over the years I have learned a great deal from all sorts of people on all sorts of topics. It’s really quite amazing to reflect on the subjects we have discussed at Hometown.  And we do it in an hour!!

We are working to improve the quality of the sound and the visuals, especially for those folks who choose to zoom into Hometown Helena. As someone said, the people who get up early and zoom into Hometown deserve a good, quality experience just like those who are there in person.

We have another great program lined upon for this week (see below).  We’ll hear from the folks at the Helena Afghan Refugee Resettlement Team (HARRT), who are working to make Helena a welcoming home for people who become refugees in their own countries. It’s no small task. It’s very challenging. The needs are many. We’ll ‘pass the hat’ this week in order to raise some money for the effort.

As we settle into Helena College, we thought we could begin giving you all some advance notice of the upcoming programs. We get together every few months, review the requests received and schedule in the guests and presentations. Kelly Cresswell maintains the list, and keeps it current. Thanks Kelly. So, here’s what awe have coming up through the end of March. This may make it easier for people to plan ahead somewhat.
