Hometown Helena this Thursday, April 4th: Helena Area Construction Update

April 2, 2024

Greetings Everyone,

The grand finale at the Montana Club last Friday was an elegant affair. It was a packed second floor from 4pm on. The crowd remained throughout the evening. The atmosphere was festive. The music was wonderful. Stories were shared. Tears were shed. Laughs were laughed. Posters were purchased. The alcohol inventory was liquidated (no pun intended) in more ways than one. It was also a bittersweet evening. In between the laughs and stories was a sadness that accompanied the end of this era for the Montana Club. That sadness permeated the gathering. Board President Charles Robison expressed the hope that new people with management experience and knowledge of the food and beverage industry will emerge to take the reins of a new and better Montana Club. We share that hope. It’s a matter of some pride, but no joy, that Hometown Helena was the ‘last group standing’ at the Montana Club. We are very thankful to the Club, its Board of Directors and Mr. John Leaf for allowing us to meet on the sixth floor weekly for nearly 20 years. It was quite a run for Hometown Helena. Nothing like the 140 year run for the Montana Club itself, however. But all things must pass.

We are settling in nicely at Helena College. Thanks to everyone who has made the transition to this fine institution every Thursday morning a rousing success the last six weeks or so. We’re getting  good attendance every week, and good participation on the Zoom. The technology at Helena College is making for a much better zoom experience. People can hear and see better than they were able to at the Montana Club. Dean Sandy Bauman and the staff have been most welcoming and receptive to our group. What a fine staff works at the College! We’re getting to know them, and it’s a pleasure working with each of them. Many Thanks!!

We have another great Hometown planned this week, with Marty Schuma, President & CEO of Dick Anderson Construction joining us for an update on the building projects underway here in Helena. This will be very interesting. We hope you can join us this week.

According to the Helena Area Chamber of Commerce 2024 Report to the Community, there are 2035 people working in the Construction Industry, representing 5.4% of the entire work force. “Other Services’ in the Report might include subcontractors like plumbers, carpenters, cabinet makers, and other skilled laborers represent another 1853—or 4.9% —of the jobs in Helena. These are good paying jobs, in terms of wages, benefits and opportunities for advancement.

With the new Shodair Hospital completed, and work at the new Montana Heritage Center moving to the interior; and while work on the new buildings at the old mall site is wrapping up; there are still many construction projects in progress. There will be a ground breaking ceremony for the expansion at Carroll College's Nelson Stadium this very morning. Overhead cranes dominate the skyline around Custer and Sanders streets. The new building for Helena Food Share is coming along nicely. New homes are being built north of Custer, and likewise on the west side of Helena. Same for East Helena and the Montana City area. Lots going on. Learn more about it Thursday morning.
