June 24th Program with Mountain Pacific Quality Health and the Small Businesses Association
From our host Jim Smith:
Greetings Everyone,
The red-coated Helena Ambassadors, assisted ably by Boy Scouts from the troops in town, will raise the American flag at 12 noon on July 4th in Centennial Park. Please c'mon down to the Park and take part in this ceremony. These simple ceremonies—raising a flag; having a parade, or an ice cream social; visiting a cemetery; speaking with a veteran about his or her service—are the things that keep us aware and united.
I’ve kept an article from The New Republic in my files since it was published in 1982. Entitled ‘The Idea of the Nation’ by Samuel H. Beer, here’s the quote that caught my attention then:
I’ve kept an article from The New Republic in my files since it was published in 1982. Entitled ‘The Idea of the Nation’ by Samuel H. Beer, here’s the quote that caught my attention then:
“What we are attempting has never before been attempted by any country at any time. It is to create within a liberal, democratic framework a society in which vast numbers of both black and white people live in free and equal intercourse—political, economic and social. It is a unique, stupendous demand, but the national idea will let us be satisfied with nothing less.”
This national idea is deeply rooted in local governments, be they county commissions, city councils or school boards. Indeed, local elected officials and the citizens who do the electing, are the strong foundation of the national idea.
With that in mind, it’s great to see that the stage is set for Helena’s municipal elections this November. The voters will elect two city commissioners and one mayor this Fall. There are two candidates for the office of mayor: Wilmot Collins and Sonda Gaub; and four candidates for the two open commission seats: Steve Allen, Eric Feaver, Troy McGee and Melinda Reed. I’m sure we’ll be hearing from and learning about these individuals in the coming months. Perhaps Hometown Helena will devote one of our Thursday morning meetings to a conversation with these candidates. In the meantime, get registered to vote. And, please educate yourselves about these candidates and the issues that motivated them to run for office. For today, it’s enough to thank these individuals for their willingness to lead and serve the people Helena. So, from Hometown Helena to these six individuals: Thank You and Good Luck.
