Message from our host Jim Smith:

November 8, 2022

Greeting Everyone,

There was some great high school football in Helena last Friday.  Congratulations to the Bruins and condolences to the Bengals.  Both teams played very well.  Vigilante Stadium wasn’t the only competitive arena in town last weekend.
I had a chance to judge a few rounds at the 'Queen City Rumble' on Saturday.  This was the the Montana AA Speech and Debate Meet, held at Helena High School.  There must have been over 200 students competing in the various categories of speech and debate.  It was truly inspiring to listen to the young people in the three categories I judged: original oratory, dramatic interpretation and humorous interpretation.  These students have a depth of understanding and an ability to communicate that is most impressive.  The kids were all dressed up in business professional outfits, suits and ties for the young men and skirts and blouses for the young ladies. They were all very poised as they took center stage in an HHS classroom, and articulate as they shared their speeches. There were great speeches on the subjects of childhood trauma and anxiety; the importance of learning life skills in high school; understanding and practicing empathy; welding as an excellent occupation; teaching and the stress on teachers.   In the humorous category there were also great speeches: what it’s like to have a really, really bad day; a funny talk on the old game of rock/paper/scissors; and a day in the life of a flight attendant.

There are other opportunities to judge speech and debate coming up soon.  We received an email from Jon Moore and Katie Jeno at Helena High School…Below.  They have extended the deadline thru this week.  Please give it some thought.  You all reading this email are most qualified and welcome to be a judge.  *Please visit the message below for details about volunteer training and the upcoming events on November 19th and the first week in December.
Probably ought to say that it’s not exactly easy judging these students and their work.  It takes good listening skills and a lot of concentration.  The kids deserve your best effort.  It’s hard work assigning points, ranking the students, and picking winners.  But it’s well worth the effort.  And judging speeches is certainly easier than giving them.  So, please give some thought to signing up as a judge at one of these upcoming speech and debate meets.
Meanwhile, we have another great program lined up for this week (seer below).  Hope to see you Thursday at the Montana Club, either in person or via the Zoom.

On Saturday, November 19th, 2022 the East Helena Speech, Drama, and Debate team will be hosting our second annual home tournament. (WOOHOO!) At this time we are asking for your help and support.  Without the time judges put in we would not be able to hold such a worthwhile event.  Attached is a form you can use to sign up to judge.  Thank you very much for your support! Training is available online for those who wish to review procedures, I have attached a presentation that will give you a general idea of how to judge and what to expect.
Please feel free to forward this onto anyone who you believe would be interested.

Thank you,
