Greetings Everyone,
Helena may have a new City Manager by the time we get together Thursday morning. After a thorough, deliberative process the City Commission is getting together later today to make a final selection. Thanks to everyone involved in the process, especially the people who applied for the job. Perhaps there will be an announcement before we get together Thursday morning?
We have some very fine guests and programs lined up for the next two months, starting this week with news from the Endangered Species Coalition and an update from the folks at the Helena Indian Alliance (see below). Whether or not to de-list the Grizzly Bear is one big question this legislative session.
One thing, among many, that I am really enjoying about this iteration of Hometown Helena (our planning calls it Hometown 3.0) is the time we are spending discussing and learning about Native American culture, history and contemporary issues. I believe a great deal of progress has been made in Montana the last 15-20 years in the effort to improve relations between Indigenous and European peoples, and between the Tribal Nations and the state of Montana. Much of the credit for this must go to the Native Americans who have served, and are serving, in the Montana Legislature. Also to former Governor Brian Schweitzer, who served from 2005 to 2013, and who made better relations a priority in his administration. And all the while, the Helena Indian Alliance (HIA) has been serving the community here. We’ll hear about the progress being made by the HIA on Thursday morning.
Thought we’d list the next few Hometown programs this week. You’ll see that there are some very interesting and important discussions coming up in March. Looking forward to seeing you Thursday mornings, either in person at the Montana Club, or via the miracle of zoom and the courtesy of Pinion Global.
