Friends,


Jim Smith is out of town this week, so Emily McVey and Emily Frazier will be our co-host.


This week we learned of the passing of life-long political reporter and Montana legend Chuck Johnson. His unwavering work ethic, staunch independence, and incredible insight helped keep Montana informed for decades going back to his coverage of the Montana Constitutional Convention as an intern.


At an informal gathering yesterday, Hal Harper, who long served in the Montana House for three of those decades noted that Chuck's mere presence near the floor elevated the debates and that representatives were often trying to watch him to see if he was taking notes. Either side of the aisle might not always like what Chuck had to say, but they had to respect it. He was a model of professionalism and civility.


Despite his prominence, he was always approachable, listened, and fun to talk to. Many of us had the privilege to know him around Helena, knew his voice from hosting political debates, and were wiser thanks to his reporting. Our thoughts and prayers go to his family, friends, and colleagues.


We are honored to be hosting a delegation from USS Montana this Thursday as they visit Helena and Bozeman this Thursday and Friday. Their full itinerary this Thursday also includes a public lunch at Fort Harrison and a presentation at the Capitol at 17:00 (5 PM), and events in Bozeman Friday as outlined in more detail here.


We'll also be hearing from Helena College Film Students and the new Montana 10 scholarship program. And, of course, it's not Hometown Helena without some of your updates, questions and conservation in person or online.
