Greeting from our host Jim Smith:

April 4, 2023

Greetings Everyone,

Growing up, our family would go out to breakfast once a year, after Mass on Easter Sunday. The weather was usually very nice back in Lake county, Indiana by this time of year. My four sisters would all have new, lovely spring Easter outfits to wear. My brother and I wore miniature sport jackets, white shirts, and ties every year. I can’t recall the name of the restaurant we went to; but I do recall the big horseshoe booth that all eight of us—six kids ranging in age from 2 to 12, plus our parents-- would squeeze into. Somehow we would all get through the annual Easter Sunday breakfast, despite the inordinate length of time it took for us to place our orders, the arguments over what we were allowed or not allowed to order (No steak and eggs for you, Jimmy!), the spilled glasses of milk, the petty bickering escalating into actual fights that would break out spontaneously between any two of us over some minor matter, or over nothing at all.

My Dad was an only child from Butte, who did not grow up with constant chaos and mayhem. My Mom came from a big family in Anaconda where there was always a certain amount chaos and mayhem in progress. So, it was always a bit tense at Easter breakfast as my Dad got more and more frustrated with us, and Mom attempted to keep him calm and preserve the peace among us. Fun times. Not sure why I share that with you this morning. Memory is a funny thing. I can recall the Easter rituals at church, the Easter egg hunts, the candy rabbits, the little baskets full of plastic green grass and hard boiled eggs; but those breakfasts are by far my clearest memories of Easter. Hope you and yours have a nice Easter weekend. The weather is supposed to be much warmer, which will be very, very nice.

Meanwhile, we have an other excellent program scheduled for you this week (see below). It’s important that we know what is being proposed by the school district for the upcoming vote. And it will be great to hear about the work being done by the Prickly Pear Land Trust. Really looking forward to seeing you in person at the Montana Club this Thursday. If you’d rather zoom into the meeting please do that. Either way OK.
