This week message from our host Jim Smith:
Greetings Everyone, Jim Cottrill gave me two bits of wise advice when he and Ron Mercer turned Hometown Helena over to the new crew. Jim said: “You’ve got to be there consistently.” And he also said “keep the politics out of Hometown.” We’ve all tried to adhere to that good advice. It’s been easier to follow Jim’s first comment than his second one. How do you keep the politics out of the discussion when politics is the very essence of Helena? If we were sitting around Syke’s in Kalispell, for example, the conversation would be all about hunting, fishing, and Glacier National Park. They talk business at Stella’s in Billings: price of oil, the Bakken, Livestock and the Metra. At the Sherman Hotel in Wolf Point the conversation would be about the weather and the price of wheat. At the Front Street Cafe in Missoula, it’s about the Grizz and the UofM. In Dillon at the 4Bs it’s all about the Elk and the snowpack. At Gamer’s in Butte it’s about Butte & the M&M.. Here in Helena…it’s all about politics and government at all levels. How can it be otherwise? My old friend Utah Phillips (U. Utah Phillips, the Golden Voice of the Great Southwest) used to say; “Politics…humph. ‘Poly' is Greek for many. ‘Tics' are bloodsucking insects.” He had a way with words. Loved his puns too. There are lots of definitions kicking around. Here’s a couple that I’ve always liked: "Government is people doing things together. Politics is the way we do things together.” In any case, government and politics is the lifeblood of Helena. So I think we were all interested to learn that Tim Burton will be returning to the City of Helena as Interim City Manager. Hopefully Tim will zoom in one of these Thursday mornings? Or perhaps he’ll join us in person? Meanwhile Helena school district elections are coming up next month. There are three (3) seats to be filled on May 3rd. The filing will close March 24th and several individuals have already filed. Please thanks these individuals for being willing to lead and serve our parents and children by running for the Helena School, Board. And, who knows, maybe some of the candidates will join us at Hometown to introduce themselves. We talk a lot about 'three legged stools.’ The old three legged milking stool seems to be a good metaphor for any number of public policies. Local government is also like a three legged stool: the City, the County and the School District are the three legs of our stool. Perhaps none of the legs is as important as the one responsible for educating our children and preparing the next generation for adulthood and citizenship. So, please learn what you can about the candidates and the issues facing the Helena School District. And please vote in the May 3rd election. We’ve got another great program lined up this week. Hope you can zoom in. Looking forward to seeing you Thursday morning.
