Hometown Helena this Thursday, June 15: Farmers Market, Old Salt Festival, Angel Fund

June 13, 2023 Greetings Everyone, I mentioned John Dendy, Executive Director of the Business Improvement District (BID) last week, and that the flower baskets would be going up on the street light poles soon. Well, they’re arriving from the florist tomorrow morning at 5am, and going up all over the BID in the next day or so. How do I know this? I know this because I have signed on as a ‘Maintenance Ambassador’ for the BID, and will be watering those baskets and emptying the trash cans one day a week this summer, along with a couple of other gentleman. Retirement has been great, but I could not pass up the opportunity to be downtown on the summer mornings, watering flowers and taking out the trash. It ought to be a great summer on the Gulch and all over the BID.  Taking this job reminded me of story my old friend Utah Phillips—that is 'U. Utah Phillips, the Golden Voice of the Great Southwest'—used to tell. His songs and stories were all about the American West, and the people who would work and wander from town to town, riding the rails. One of Utah’s hobo friends was ‘Dawdlin’ Bill.’ According to Utah, Dawdlin’ Bill “had a big Montana bedroll and embroidered in Latin on it was the slogan 'Mores Ante Servitium.’ ” The translation is: ‘Death Before Employment.’  Words to live by. But I couldn’t pass up the chance to work with John and BID this summer. Look for us if you’re out early! We have another very interesting Hometown planned for this Thursday (see below).
