Hometown Helena this Thursday, June 8:

Crimestoppers, Habitat for Humanity

June 6, 2023

Greetings Everyone,

Today is the 79th anniversary of D-Day, the Allied landings on the beaches of Normandy, in World War II. Time goes by, memories fade, other battles have been fought and other wars have been waged. There has been nothing quite like WWII, however. If you have thirteen (13) minutes, please watch this video clip of President Ronal Reagan’s June 6, 1984 speech commemorating the 40th anniversary of D-Day. Lest we forget.

We have another interesting hour planned for Thursday morning (see below).  Hope you can join us for update from Helena Crimestoppers and Helena Habitat for Humanity. We’ve talked about housing a few times over the months, but we have not devoted much time or energy to the matter of crime in Helena. I got looking around the internet and found quite a bit of information about crime and crime data and statistics here in the capital city. It’s easy to get lost in the numbers, and the numbers themselves don’t tell us anything about the terrible toll on individuals and families that crime takes. Nevertheless, the numbers are important and they do tell us something. If crime does not touch us personally we tend, naturally enough, not to think about it much. You can look this information over at your leisure and draw your own conclusions. If time permits we can have some discussion this week. Perhaps someone from the Helena Police Departments or the Lewis and Clark county Sheriff’s Office will be on hand for any comments or questions we may have this Thursday.

Regardless of our personal experience, crime does touch all of us. If nothing else, a lot of taxpayer dollars are spent each year on law enforcement, public safety, and criminal prosecutions. The 2023 budget of the Helena Police Department is $10.8 million dollars. The 2022-23 budget for the Lewis and Clark county Sheriff’s Office is $15.4 million. The budget for the County Attorney’s Office is $3.3 million. That’s real money in my book.

Here’s a few sites that I thought had useful information, and a chart from one of these sites, for your review and consideration.
