Hometown Helena this Thursday, September 14th: Suicide Prevention & Gun Safety

September 12, 2023

Hello everyone!

We’re giving Jim the week off from writing the Hometown message, so I figured I'd take a crack at it. As a young professional, it’s a real pleasure to be a part of the organizing team here at Hometown. I so appreciate Jim’s insight, passion, and open mind as a host.

We’re very happy to have Lewis & Clark County Suicide Prevention Coordinator Jess Hegstrom join us to talk about common-sense methods to keep our communities safe and cared-for. We’ll also have a surprise guest from Gun Owners for Safety, who worked on bipartisan legislation to protect those that store firearms for others from legal liabilities in case someone subsequently harms themselves after picking up their gun.

Jess has done a wonderful job teaching our community to respond to suicide, threats of self-harm, and mental health crises. We met years ago in AmeriCorps, where she was launching a local Man Therapy campaign to promote men’s mental wellbeing. She has since gone on to organize local NAMI Walks, train organizations on crisis response, and promote gun locks and safes. Most recently, she was featured in an NPR article for her efforts to create a local "safe storage map" identifying gun shops and other locations willing to store guns for the public. Jess is awesome.

We’ll also be hearing a brief announcement from the Montana Special Olympics! They’ve got a longer program for us later this fall, but the drive for volunteers is ramping up now.

Please join us this Thursday, in person on the 6th floor of the Montana Club, or streaming on Zoom.
