September 5, 2023
Greetings Everyone,
It was a Tuesday morning in September like no other twenty two (22) years ago. I know we each have our very own 9-11 story: who we were with, what we were doing, the first thing we did after seeing the second tower tumble, how we reacted or processed the news, the images, the information coming at us over the television that day. Maybe we can share a few of those stories with each other this week at Hometown Helena.
Myself? My story? I recall saying to myself that morning: “So, this is what it feels like to be at war.” I never felt that way during the Vietnam conflict. That was distant, remote, abstract. The events of September 11, 2001, on the other hand, were proximate, nearby, and real.
Over time the horror of that day recedes, memories fade, other conflicts arise, life goes on and the world keeps turning. With the passage of time, it takes more of an effort to remember what happened. The passage of time, however, may or may not have given us answers to what happened and why? I’m sure we’ve all reflected on what happened that fateful day, where it has led the country over the last 22 years, and what the future may hold for the USA.
At some point I determined not to forget. I decided to keep the memory fresh in my mind. So, it’s really great that Eric Dowell, manager of Safeway-Albertson’s, has arranged a special commemoration at his grocery stores for the Helena community on September 11, 2023. Eric has titled this event: “It All Began With A Helmet.” Eric is going to preview the commemoration with us this week at Hometown Helena. He has arranged for very special events, and has invited a very special guest to join us and help commemorate the day.
This is a Hometown Helena you do not want to miss. Please join us this Thursday, in person on the 6th floor of the Montana Club, or via the miracle of zoom.
