Hometown Helena this Thursday, April 25th: Mann Gulch 75th & Helena School Levies
Friends, For those of you who joined us last week or from the Zoom ether, we had another great, classic Hometown with community updates, a visit by the Carroll College Lady Saints Basketball team, a preview of "What Happened While Hero Was Dead," and a discussion of how to be green as we approach Earth Day. All of course available thanks to Pinion's support with Zoom, our hosts at Helena College, Haley and the Hometown Team, and so many joining for coffee and community every week. Jim's reflections last week highlighted that Earth Day has been memorable for generations now with history before my time. To many, it is the New Years resolution for us to think globally and find ways to act locally. There are a lot of questions... Should I recycle plastics? What does compostable mean? What do I do with office paper? Can a renter recycle at the Transfer Station? Are we getting better at recycling in Helena? If glass is sand, why bother? Why isn't recycling free? What can I do? What can businesses do? I'll stop there, but there are answers to these and many more questions at 406 Recycling’s FAQ page. We have another great Hometown Helena this week with a presentation by Helena School and a preview of events this summer in commemoration of the Mann Gulch Fire seventy-five years ago this August. The Mann Gulch Fire and the loss of 13 brave wildland firefighters is told in Norman Maclean's "Young Men and Fire'' and captured in James Kelleghan's "Cold Missouri Waters" is a reminder of the risk so many make protecting lands and communities to this day. A tragedy in the early days of Smoke Jumpers for the United States Forest Service, it has served as a lesson to save countless lives going forward and continues in policy and planning even today. Visit the Montana Discovery Foundation's website for events and ways to support the celebration. Also, thank you Jim for being our host and all you do for the community and being green. Jim drives a young gentleman in supported employment to work out at the 406 Recycling shop twice a week. He was a big part of the long, complicated, and successful effort to restore water year-round water to Ten Mile Creek among many other efforts over the years including expanded parks, open lands, and trails! Most of all, I hope you had a happy Earth Day Matt Elsaesser, 406 Recycling
