Hometown Helena Thursday, May 9th: Helena College

Hometown Helena this Thursday, May 9th: Helena College

May 7, 2024

Greetings Everyone,

Spring is always a bit slow to arrive here in the Northern Rockies. This year is no exception. These cloudy days and the blustery winds are typical. A buddy of mine is skiing at Showdown today, where three feet (3’) of new snow is expected. Other friends are heading for the Smith river later this week. All in all, I think I’d rather ski than float this week. But to each his or her own.

We’ve been enjoying ourselves and the hospitality at Helena College for awhile now. It’s been fun these last several Thursday mornings meeting the staff, learning the techno-ropes, and visiting the canteen. We’re going to learn more about Helena College this week. There is a lot going on at Helena College in addition to the regular course work and classes. Dean Sandy Bauman will discuss some of the programs that we might not know about.

Helena College is the home of the Small Business Development Center, the Montana Motorcycle Rider Safety Program, and the Community Education Center. Instructors from each will join us this week to discuss their program, their students and the progress being made in each. In addition, Dean Sandy will lead a tour of the new Cosmetology Salon for anyone who missed the grand opening and ribbon cutting a few weeks back.

Since we began meeting at Helena College, I’ve found myself thinking frequently of Representative Gene Donaldson, who was from the Helena valley and served in the legislature for many years. He was a genuine statesman and a great Montanan. We meet in Donaldson Hall at Helena College each week. Gene made vocational education a priority during his years of public service. He was instrumental in integrating Montanan’s vocational institutions into the Montana University System. As I recall, this took a great deal of time and effort, and maybe a couple of sessions to complete. But he got ‘er done. I believe Rep. Donaldson would be very, very pleased with what has happened at Helena College over the last few decades.

Please join us this Thursday, either in person at Helena College or via the Zoom…courtesy of Aja Rail and the good people at Pinion Global, Inc. You’ll be glad you did.
