Hometown Helena this Thursday, November 21st: FLEX Students

November 19, 2024

Hey Y’all,

Well, the year is winding down like a clock… to use a quaint old simile. It has been quite a year for your correspondent here. And for Helena. Lots has happened. Most of it good. Hope all has been well with you and yours. You know who you are!

The Holidays are upon us. This Friday (Nov. 22) at the Library from 10am to 5 pm is the annual Turkey Challenge sponsored by the Helena Food Resource Center. The goal this year is 2800 turkeys. Frozen. Bring your frozen turkey to the Library. It will get you into the holiday spirit. If you can’t make it to the L&C Library Friday, go ahead and bring a turkey or turkey breast to Hometown Helena Thursday morning. I have it on good authority that Turkey Tim Joyce, from the Food Resource Center, will join us to jump start the Turkey Challenge!

This week we’re going to be joined by three students from the FLEX program. You might recall that a year ago we had students from Tunisia, Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan at Hometown Helena. We learned how to do the latest dance from Kyrgyzstan. It looked like the Twist to me!

FLEX (Future Leaders Exchange Program) is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Students from other nations come to the USA, attend school, and live with a host family for nine months. Emily McVey and her husband have been a host family and graciously arranged for the FLEX students to come and talk to us this week at Hometown Helena. Emily tells me that Rasul, from Kyrgyzstan, is back in his home there, going to school and doing very well. He’s applying to various colleges in the USA. So who knows, we may see him again one of these days.

Our guests this week will be: Mia Dvozak from Serbia; Norovsuren (Nova) from Mongolia; and Ali Makhmelov from Kazakhstan. Each of these students has prepared a fifteen (15) minute presentation on the customs, culture, and traditions of their home country. This will be fun and interesting for everyone. Please plan to attend Hometown this week and give these kids a warm Montana welcome.

Given the program, our time for introductions and announcements will be limited. We’ll try to keep things moving along in order that each of these students can share their full presentation with us without feeling rushed.

Please join us, either in person or via the magic of Zoom, courtesy of Aja Rail and the good people at Pinion Global, Inc.  See you Thursday,

Jim Smith
