Hometown Helena this Thursday, June 26th: Helena History, Train Tours

June 24, 2025

Hey Y’all,

There’s nothing more fun than showing off Helena to visitors from all over the country, and the world, especially during the beautiful summer days and evenings. Whether it’s the wonderful architecture of the west side mansion district, or the shops and stops, restaurants and breweries in the historic downtown, the state Capitol building (don’t forget the Indian Tacos served there every Monday in July), Reeder’s Alley, the Cathedral of St. Helena, or simply the canopy of trees along and above Broadway, 6th Avenue and the other streets in town...the capital city is absolutely lovely to behold and see. In addition, Helena is steeped in history. Indeed, the political history of Montana is centered right here. Since 1896. And, we’re still making history here, at least every other year when the Legislature comes to town.

This week at Hometown Helena we’ll get a preview of the opportunities to show off our city this summer. Zach Coe, with the Foundation for Montana History and Lee Holmes, with the Last Chance Tour Train will be our special guests. They will brief us up on how to show off Helena to our visiting friends and relatives this summer.

The Foundation for Montana History has partnered with Visit Helena to conduct walking tours of Helena’s historic districts and neighborhoods. Helena is a most walkable community, and these walking history tours really do our city proud. And if you or your guests would rather ride in style and comfort, The Last Chance Tour Train has been showing folks the capital city since 1954, for the last 71 years.

There is truly too much to say about each of these organizations and their activities to squeeze into this email. You’ll just have to come to Hometown Helena Thursday morning to learn about it all. Or, you can check out these web sites anytime.

And even if you do investigate these sites, please still come Thursday morning to Helena College from 7-8 am. Or Zoom in from the comfort of your home or office if you can’t be there in person this week. Aja Rail and her co-workers at Pinion have been allowing Hometown Helena to use their Zoom platform for almost five years now. Many, many thanks!!

See You Thursday Morning,

Jim Smith
