Message from our Host Jim Smith:
Greetings Everyone,
Our third and final Candidate Forum will be this Thursday morning. This week we will hear from candidates for the eastern Montana Congressional District (MT 2nd). As of a few days ago we are expecting two of the three candidates to join us, in person or via zoom. This district covers a lot of territory, from Helena to Plentywood. That’s roughly 500 miles. The land and the people within the district are varied and diverse. It will be no small challenge for whoever ends up representing the district.
We’re holding this forum one day before the absentee ballots are sent, on October 14th. We’ve squeezed a lot of people and a lot of presentations into the three forums sponsored by Hometown Helena. It’s our hope that it has helped Helena voters better understand who is running, and what their individual priorities are. Informed voters make better choices. It’s that simple. Phil Drake at the Independent Record has done some excellent stories on these forums. Thanks Phil for your contributions to helping with voter education and understanding. And, once again, thanks to Peter Strauss for taking the lead on behalf of Hometown Helena.
This will be a brief message. It’s been a long campaign season for the people seeking office. They’ve been working for the better part of a year now, trying to earn your vote. Our thanks and appreciation to each and every one of them for being will to run for office, for being able to brave the criticism that comes with this territory, and for the sacrifices they and their families have made. There are several textbook definitions of ‘government.’ You can look them up in your Funk and Wagnalls. The one I like is pretty simple: ‘Government’ is people doing thing together. It can’t work any other way. We have good government in Montana because we have good people from all walks of life who are willing to lead and serve the rest of us. We thank them all.
Hope to see you this Thursday morning, either in person or via zoom.
